Improving state management of belief in the new context
12:22 AM 28/06/2026 Views: 7 PrintThe Government Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) under the Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs in colloboration with the Ethnic and Religious Affairs in Tuyen Quang province held on June 26-27 a conference to provide guidance on belief activities in line with the law and on new religious phenomena in the province.
The conference was attended by GCRA Vice Chairwoman Trần Thị Minh Nga, Deputy Director of the provincial Ethnic and Religious Affairs Department Nguyễn Thế Đồi, and 140 delegates representing management board members and representatives of belief establishments, belief practitioners, prestigious persons, village elders, village heads and Mong clan heads in Tuyen Quang province.
Belief management faces new practical demands
In recent years, socio-economic life has developed, people’s belief needs have become increasingly diverse. Belief remains an important part of cultural and spiritual life. It helps preserve national cultural identity, strengthen community bonds and meet people’s legitimate spiritual needs.
Speaking at the event, GCRA Vice Chairwoman Trần Thị Minh Nga said about 95% of Vietnam’s population follow a belief or religion. According to local statistics, as of August 2025, the country had about 80,000 belief establishments. More than 35,000 of them had a representative or a management board. About 70% had registered their activities under the Law on Belief and Religion.
According to a report by the provincial Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs, state management of belief in the province has been carried out synchronised manner. Belief activities have generally complied with the law and matched local customs and people’s cultural and spiritual needs.
Following the reorganisation of administrative units and two-tier local government model, local communes and wards have continued to step up legal dissemination. They have guided belief establishments to comply with regulations on organising activities and managing donated assets, and to strengthen their representatives and management boards.
Promoting prestigious persons’ role in bringing belief laws into life
The event discussed about the role of prestigious persons, village elders, village heads and clan heads in Mong communities. They help preserve and promote traditional cultural values and encourage people to adopt a civilised lifestyle. They also work with local authorities to detect and prevent the abuse of belief and religion that affects security and order.
The conference also focused on new key contents of the new Law on Belief and Religion, which will take effect on January 1, 2027. The new Law keeps provisions that remain relevant and adds many new ones to meet practical needs, including regulations on belief and religious activities in cyberspace, reduced administrative procedures, and stronger digital transformation in the field of belief and religion, etc.
Participants also had exhanged on how to identify new religious phenomena and shared experience in handling situations arising in practice. They answered delegates’ questions on managing belief activities at the grassroots level.
