Nha Trang Cathedral: A Catholic architectural landmark in the heart of the coastal city
12:08 PM 11/09/2026 Views: 7 PrintPerched on a small hill near the Ngã Sáu (six-way) intersection in Nha Trang, Nha Trang Cathedral stands out with its bell tower, soaring vaults and stained glass windows, all bearing the hallmarks of Gothic architecture. For nearly a century, it has been the center of religious life for the Diocese of Nha Trang.
The church’s official name is Christ the King Cathedral. Locals often call it by familiar names such as the Mountain Church (Nhà thờ Núi), the Stone Church (Nhà thờ Đá) or Ngã Sáu Church. The building covers a total area of 720 square meters. French priest Louis Vallet began its construction on September 3, 1928. The church was put into use in 1933.
The main facade of Nha Trang Cathedral features a bell tower, a clock, a rose window and arched doorways typical of Gothic architecture.
The highlight of the building is its bell tower, which rises about 38 meters above street level. The tower has a large clock with four faces pointing in four directions. Its bronze bells were made in France and blessed in 1934 and 1939.
The main entrance sits beneath a pointed arch. Above it are the IHS Christogram and symmetrically arranged patterned glass windows.
A path winds up the hillside to the church. Along one side stand memorial plaques for the departed, creating a quiet, contemplative space on the grounds.
Beyond its architecture, the church grounds also include outdoor spaces for remembrance and prayer. Statues of saints, crosses, flowers and greenery are arranged in harmony, adding to the solemn atmosphere.

The cathedral holds Mass every day and hosts many important ceremonies of the Diocese of Nha Trang. Its schedule is posted in Vietnamese, English and French. This serves parishioners as well as foreigners who live, work in or visit the area.
The liturgical schedule is displayed in three languages.
Inside, the church impresses visitors with its massive pillars and soaring pointed arches. The continuous intersecting vaults support the structure. They also give the interior a sense of space and depth.
Pointed arches, massive pillars and intersecting ribs clearly reflect the Gothic style inside the church.
Stained glass windows are set in many places. They let natural light into the church and depict scenes from the Bible. The light filtering through the glass accentuates the height of the vaults and the solemnity of the sanctuary.

Nearly a century after it was built, Nha Trang Cathedral still plays an important role in the religious life of local Catholics. It also adds to the architectural, cultural and religious diversity of the area.
